One of the primary causes of urbanization is what demographers call “rural to urban migration.” Migrants leave their homes in rural areas for a confluence of reasons — degraded farm land, drought, confiscated land, etc. — and move to cities, often because they have no other option. Some have argued that the best way to relieve the stress that these migrants are placing on cities, which often lack the infrastructure to handle them, is to improve rural areas so that they never end up migrating in the first place.
