Hello there! This was an interesting post, and I share many of your frustrations with the Metro Bus system. But one still wonders about the sustainability of Joburg public transport when considering that Metro Bus is retained as a service operating alongside Rea Vaya. One gets the impression that Metro Bus will continue to provide a useless service, while Rea Vaya will provide a better one. The problem however is that the tax payer continues to support both services!

And it is also my concern that Rea Vaya will begin to follow the route of Metro Bus if they do not improve their services too. Already the complementary services around the CBD have been put on hold until early next year because of low ridership on these routes. Yet the reason this is so is because people do not know HOW to use the service. There are no timetables, route maps or proper bus shelters on these routes, and instead one is left guessing when the next bus comes - very similar to the Metro Bus service!

The trunk routes too do not display enough information, and are not being used to their full potential. The LED screens displaying bus arrival times still do not work; cars and taxis continue to use BRT lanes without any consequences; and the system isn't as slick as it should be, requiring attendants to manually open station doors in order to connect the station to the bus.

See my trip report here... http://urbanjoburg.blogspot.com/2009/11/rea-vaya-trip-report-tale-of-obscurity.html
