The Center for Sustainable Transport in Mexico (CTS-México) is hosting the Fifth International Conference on Sustainable Transport this week, presenting lectures and discussions around the theme of “Low Carbon, Competitive Cities. The annual conference, held this week from October 12 to 14 in Mexico City, brings together policymakers, transport engineers and city officials from Mexico and abroad to discuss the relationship between climate change, sustainable transport and urbanism.

A couple of highlights from Monday’s agenda:

• Benefits of the Relation Between Climate Change and Air Quality, moderated by Martha Delgado, Secretary of Environment for Mexico City. The distinguished panel of guests includes Cornie Huizenga, coordinator of transportation and climate change of the Asian Development Bank; Sergio Sanchez of the Clean Air Initiative for Latin American Cities; Adrian Fernandez of the National Institute of Ecology; Rodolfo Lacy of the Mario Molina Center; Lee Schipper of the University of California-Berkeley; and Victor Hugo Paramo of the Secretary of the Environment for Mexico City.
• Strategies and Tools for Urban Development, with a special focus on using LEED certification for neighborhood development and remote sensing tools for sustainability, plus, a presentation about fostering urban mobility in developing countries by EMBARQ Director Nancy Kete.
