Hybrids for New York City

Mayor Bloomberg has finally given the push to something hybrids were created for – stop and go traffic in New York City. As the New York Times reports, the Mayor announced earlier today a plan to phase out the city’s 1,200 Crown Victoria taxis and replace them with hybrid vehicles powered by both electricity and gasoline. My only worry is that the new hybrids that the Mayor plans to add to the fleet will be large SUVs, like the one above, with modest fuel economy, rather than normal taxis with very good fuel economy. But regardless, the change will result in fuel and air pollution savings.

    I am glad to see a city actually standing up and rising above the rest to start a trend that will hopefully save our little green planet.

  • Only land(barren or arid)water,productivity of the trees/plants and ofcourse economics has to be considered for setting up the bio-mass plant for generating bioelectricity

  • The fuel gas or producer gas generated from wood by pyrolysis has only medium calorific value when compared to petrol,diesel or natural gas. The vehicles are to be filled with the gas frequently since the volume occupied is high when compared to natural gas. Also the fine particles released from the exhaust of vehicles using fuel gas or producer gas affects the lungs of the living beings causing cancer. The producer or fuel gas cannot be compressed or liquefied.Considering all the above facts I suggest only dual powered vehicle using only electricity
    with hybrid drive for New York city. This fuel suggested by me is totally eco- friendly, renewable source which is also eco-friendly. I will appreciate this innovation of mine is propagated by WRI in USA and elsewhere so that the citizens of the world is benefited immensely so long as the mother earth exists.I repeat both personal and public transportation is possible with my innovation.

  • The transport of fuel gas from the production point (Forests) to the user points is through pipelines only.

  • Running the vehicle only on the bio-fuel sourced from Bio-Mass ,I have the following information gathered from the energy technology books–Fuel gas is produced by the thermal degradation (Pyrolysis) of bio-Mass. Its main combustible components are carbon monoxide and hydrogen, but its composition and calorific value vary according to the way it is produced and the raw material (Bio-Mass etc)used. Fuel gas from an air-blown gasifier, for example, may have a calorific value of around 5MJ per cubic meters, whereas that from an oxygen-fed system may be as high as 20MJ per cubic meters. Is is generally uneconomic to transport low and medium-calorific value gases over long distances. They are best burnt on site to provide mechanical or electrical energy or converted into more useful substances like methane and methanol. Fuel gas can replace petrol or diesel used in vehicles. During world was II over a million cars, trucks and buses run on gas obtained from wood and other solid fuels in a small-gasifier-towed in a trailer behind the vehicle.
    Instead of trolley wire electric traction I suggest to transport the fuel gas from production point (Mainly forest) to the various user points for the vehicles to fill in.
    Engines operating on a spark ignition system (Petrol Engines) can be made to run entirely on fuel gas whereas those using compression ignition systems (Diesel Engines) can be made to operate with about 80% fuel oil (Diesel) replacement by fuel gas. In larger systems, the gas can be burnt directly(Industrial fired boiler) and generate electricity through steam route.

  • It is possible to generate methane (Natural Gas ) from bio-mass (Wood) through anaerobic process. The methane thus generated can be compressed and used in vehicles as a fuel. There will not be any increase in the carbon- di -oxide level in the atmosphere since carbon cycle is maintained and hence eco-friendly provided the natural gas is generated from bio-mass. No need of trolley wire electric traction but the most important point to note is that the fine particles released from the exhaust wherever methane is used as a fuel is a health hazard , causes lung cancer for living beings,but this is not the case with my dual powered vehicle. It is a one time cost for provision of trolley wire electric traction.

  • My dual powered vehicle with hybrid drive can easily be made use of in the BRTS for public transport which will make BRTS totally eco-friendly with perpetual fuel(availability). For personal and public transport like cars and taxis respectively an exclusive lane/lanes can be laid on the roads by the side of BRTS.For low density traffic no trolley wire traction is required and battery alone power can be used.

  • Details on wood based thermal power plant: Bioelectricity.

    Wood based thermal power plant (Incineration and steam generation route) will ensure availability of clean fuel perpetually.Ecological balance of the atmosphere is maintained. Emissions of the oxides of sulphur and nirogen is absent. The ash content of the wood is low. Mass rural employment is created for growing trees and harvesting it.

    The following statistical information taken from the energy technology books supports my suggestion.
    1) Wood based thermal power plant of 100MW capacity requires 7.5 lakhs tonnes of wood per annum.
    2) Cost of new wood thermal power plant (100MW Capacity)-Indian Rupees-360 crores.
    3)Area of cultivation ( Barren lands) required for 100MW wood thermal plant-315 Sq.Km. This ensures wood availability perpetually.
    4)India has a total area of 33 lakhs Sq. Km. For generating 1.5Lakhs( 1 Million=10Lakhs) MW electric power area required is 4.7 Lakhs Sq.Km. which is 14% roughly.
    5) The residue (Ash) from the wood based thermal power plant can be used as fertilizer alone or in combination with other chemicals.
    6) The existing coal based thermal power plants can be converted to wood based thermal power plants.
    7) The government is currently promoting jatropa cultivation for biodiesel production. I think it is better to grow trees, generate bioelecticity and run the vehicle in dual mode since it is total eco-friendly.

  • To Mr. Lee schipper,I thank you sir for your kind response.Yes, running in the dual mode is
    better with my innovation since the road transport vehicle can go on all roads using electricity generated by bio-mass or bio fuel plants installed in the land and fed to the trolley wire traction laid as per design. It is difficult to lay trolley wire traction at junctions,turnings. At Junctions, turnings and curves battery power is used automatically. This is a marked difference when compared to trolley buses which can go only where the trolley wire traction is laid and not on all roads.Hooking to the trolley wire traction is done manually by the driver of the vehicle.Currently road transport vehicle using other bio fuels like ethanol blended petrol, biodiesel uses non renewable fossil fuels and also pollutes the atmosphere to the extent percentage of fossil fuel is blended.In my case bio fuel is used 100% through the bio-electricity route (No combustion arrangement exists in the vehicle since electric motor is the engine) and nil pollution since carbon cycle of our planet is maintained whereas in bio diesel and ethanol blended petrol only 20% and 50% maximum blending of bio fuel is possible respectively.

    There will not be any implications for using bio-electricity for all other applications and this can be used for heating, cooking etc with suitable equipments/gadgets/devices. This is like using electricity generated from any other source.MY innovation uses electricity generated from an eco-friendly source and so also is my road transport vehicle with Zero emission. Global warming is contained and my fuel is from a renewable source. The current battery vehicles has limited range, take long hours for charging etc and hence this innovation.Toyota’s prius car is a hybrid car using petrol and battery.Here pollution occurs when petrol is used. My innovation is an indirect application of solar energy generating electricity in an abundant manner and at an affordable cost.My innovation also is a dual powered vehicle using only electricity and the drive is hybrid since I use battery and traction drive. I am eagerly expecting your valuable comments since the whole world will be benefitted by my innovation.

  • This is interesting — have you compared the difference between running only on the bio fuel vs running in the dual mode? And have you thought of what the implications would be for using the bio-electricity for other applications and running all of your mobility from a different biofuel or from petrol?

  • Electricity for my dual powered vehicle can be generated in an eco-friendly manner through Bio-Mass(Wood)- combustion and steam generation route not gasifer route repeat not gasifier route.Energy plantations of trees with high calorific value like Juliflora is recommended with regular planned harvesting and planned replanting. Since bio-mass is a renewable fuel we can generate electricity so long as the earth exists. This is not the case of coal or nuclear since both are non renewable. In toto my idea generates electricity in an eco-friendly way so also my dual powered hybrid drive vehicle runs with zero emission. With fire wood,fire,water and copper along with other metals/plastics used in the vehicle it is easy to run the transport system so long as the earth exists.I may be given an opportunity to present the paper at WRI wherein the whole technology will be discussed. Four volumes of wood can replace one volume of coal for the same calorific value in thermal power plants and 2kgs of wood is equal to one kg. of coal for the same calorific value.More later

  • The problem of air pollution can be tackled easily provided the respective governments show interest.I have here a zero emission dual powered hybrid drive road transport vehicle ( Three wheelers and above) running on battery and trolley wire electric traction using only electricity as an energy source.You start with battery power from your house, main roads you use trolley wire traction in straight lanes with the help of bow collectors at the top of a collapsible pole which is itself fixed on top of the vehicle. For turnings, overtaking and parking use battery power. The limitations of the battery alone powered vehicle is set right.It is to be noted that the batteries gets charged while using trolley wire traction. My vehicle requires only electricity which can be generated by nuclear power and dependence on crude oil products is nil.
