Leaders in sustainable transport from around the world are exploring urban transportation solutions at the 2011 Sustainable Transport Symposium beginning today in Kocaeli, Turkey. The three-day event is hosted by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, with the support of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey and EMBARQ (the producer of this blog). Attendees of the first-of-its-kind conference in Turkey include local decision-makers and technical experts from 75 cities with a population greater than 95,000 people.

Speakers include Habib Soluk, Minister of Transport Mehmet; Ercan Topaca, Governor of Kocaeli; İbrahim Karaosmanoğlu, Mayor of Kocaeli; Kadir Topbaş, President of Turkish Municipalities Association; and Nicholas Bromley, Interim Director of the U.K.-based Transport Knowledge Transfer Network.

Other speakers will include Sibel Bulay, EMBARQ Turkey Director; Dario Hidalgo, EMBARQ Director of Research and Practice; and Yorgos Voukas, Director of Integrated Transport Systems at EMBARQ/CTS-México. Bulay will speak on sustainable transportation policies and projects, Hidalgo will speak on bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, and Voukas will speak on Mexico’s Metrobus and Macrobus BRT systems.
